I will be using the latest version of OpenOffice/LibreOffice running on either a Windows 7 laptop or Vista desktop.ĭata Source, College #, Salutation, First, Last, address1, address2, address3, address4, City, Province, Postal Code, phone, email, deceased, lost, branch, class, language Nice to have but not essential, devise a means of allowing me to accept the highlighted differences for incorporation into the BRANCH listing. For a record that is in both NATIONAL and BRANCH, highlight in both a field that is different. Highlight a record in BRANCH that is not in NATIONAL (deletion)ģ. Highlight a record in NATIONAL that is not in BRANCH (addition)Ģ. List and highlight changes, additions, and deletions that are found in the NATIONAL listingġ. Compare the NATIONAL listing to the BRANCH listingī. Needless to say this is a very time consuming task since we have about 650 members on file. When we receive an updated listing, we manually compare the NATIONAL and BRANCH listings to determine changes, additions and deletions and then update the BRANCH worksheet accordingly. In addition to the information provided by NATIONAL, we append to each member record information of local interest Our BRANCH (namely me) maintains its membership data in an Excel worksheet. Each month, NATIONAL sends an Excel worksheet containing member information to each BRANCH – this worksheet does not highlight additions, deletions or changes to data previously sent to the BRANCHES. NATIONAL maintains the data on it members in an unspecified database. BRANCHES have no paid staff and are supported solely by volunteers. NATIONAL has a small number of paid employees with minimal IT support coming from the College. Beneath NATIONAL there are a number of BRANCHES responsible for alumni in the local geographic areas. ![]() Our College alumni organization maintains a NATIONAL office. ![]() My involvement in this project is as a volunteer because no one else would take it on. In fact, as suggested by others, I have in the last few days started to read about database concepts by following a low level tutorial I found on the internet. ![]() I have a very rudimentary knowledge of working with spreadsheets and absolutely no experience with databases. The only formal computer training I have is from the early 1960's when I failed the course of study in programming in FORTRAN and marginally passed the course on analogue and digital concepts. I am a 70 year old retired (in 1996) Electrical Engineer. The following should provide some background and what I need and why I am doing it. ![]() I need some help to develop a means of comparing two files so that changes, additions and deletions of records will be highlighted. ![]()
